DESCRIPTION

Cholesterol is a lipid molecule essential to all animal life. It is the precursor of steroid hormones and vitamin D. It makes up about 30% of cell membranes. It is transported via lipoproteins including HDL, LDL, VLDL in the blood, as free cholesterol and as cholesteryl esters. AkrivisBio’s Cholesterol/Cholesteryl Ester Assay provides a simple, sensitive method of quantifying free, esterified or total cholesterol (cholesterol and cholesteryl esters). In this assay, cholesteryl esters are hydrolyzed to cholesterol by cholesterol esterase, which is then oxidized by cholesterol oxidase to yield hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is utilized by the peroxidase to oxidize ADHP thereby resulting in the formation of intense color or fluorescence measured at OD 570 nm or at Ex/Em = 535/587 nm respectively.
