Caspase-3 initiates apoptosis after being activated in response to various intrinsic and extrinsic signals. It degrades specific proteins involved in DNA repair, cytoskeletal maintenance, and cell cycle progression, ensuring a systematic, orderly breakdown of the cell and preventing the release of potentially harmful cellular components into the surrounding environment. This results in characteristic morphological changes associated with apoptosis including cell shrinkage, chromatin condensation and formation of apoptotic bodies.
