Collagenase, a member of the MMP family, degrades collagen, a fibrous protein, the most abundant protein in the human body and a major component of skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. Controlled breakdown of collagen allows for tissue remodeling, wound healing, and maintaining the overall integrity of connective tissues. Collagenase is tightly regulated by several mechanisms including transcriptional regulation, post-translational modifications, cellular signaling pathways (including MAPK and other growth factors and cytokines), tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases, end-product inhibition which inhibits the enzyme activity and regulation of zinc levels. AkrivisBio’s Collagenase Activity Assay is a simple, sensitive way to monitor collagenase activity in a variety of biological samples with a lower limit of detection in the low microunit range.
