Glutathione is the principal intracellular low-molecular-weight thiol which maintains the redox state of the cell. It balances the constant oxidative metabolism of living systems, neutralizing the appearance of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.  It is the primary cellular defense against oxidative stress in mammalian cells. Decreased intracellular reduced glutathione concentration is a hallmark of early apoptosis. AkrivisBio’s Glutathione Detection Kit utilizes Monochlorobimane which complexes with glutathione, catalyzed by Glutathione S-Transferase. This assay provides a simple, sensitive means for detecting glutathione under a variety of conditions. Upon binding to glutathione, MCB shows a blue fluorescence giving a highly sensitive readout for both oxidized and reduced forms of glutathione. It does not measure glutathione-protein disulfides.
