DESCRIPTION

Iodide, a halide anion is a limiting required substrate for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones, Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3), essential for regulating growth, development and energy expenditure. T3 acts on nearly every cell of the body, regulating metabolism by controlling the rate of oxygen consumption. Hypothyroidism affects as much as 5% of the global population. An additional 5% may be undiagnosed. Iodide is only introduced into the body through diet, which becomes a problem in places where soil and water are low in iodine. In much of the developed world, salt is iodized to ensure adequate intake of iodine, which has reduced the prevalence of iodine deficiency disorders. AkrivisBio’s Iodide Assay is a simple, sensitive means of measuring iodide in a variety of sample types with a sensitivity below 200 nM.
