Inosine, a nucleoside formed from xanthine and ribose is typically identified as an intermediate in the purine salvage pathway. Beyond that role, inosine is implicated in a number of actions: modulation of processes related to cellular respiration and ATP production; signal transduction pathways; regulation of gene expression (it is also found in tRNA) and it has been found to have immunomodulatory effects associated with purinergic signaling. Inosine has been investigated as a neuroprotective agent in Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases as well as a possible immunomodulatory agent in MS. Finally, inosine has been studied for its potential in treatment of spinal cord injury and in ischemic injury s a cardioprotective agent. AkrivisBio’s Inosine Assay is a simple, sensitive means of quantifying inosine in a variety of sample types with a sensitivity below ~ 100 μM.
