Streptokinase, a protein produced by various strains of streptococci, is a therapeutic drug and is used to treat cardiovascular conditions. Streptokinase’s primary metabolic function is to convert inert plasminogen to plasmin, in a non-enzymatic process. Plasmin is very active in the breakdown of blood clots. Streptokinase binds a molecule of plasminogen, forming a complex which undergoes a conformational change, creating an active site which then acquires a proteolytic activity, converting other molecules of plasminogen to plasmin. It is used as a fibrinolytic agent to treat patients with strokes or myocardial infarction. AkrivisBio’s Streptokinase Activity Assay is a simple, sensitive means to evaluate the activity of Streptokinase and its effectiveness as a thrombolytic agent. The assay is able to detect less than 3 mU of Streptokinase activity.
