Xanthine and hypoxanthine are purine derivatives which are intermediates in the degradation of adenine and guanine. The purine catabolic pathway helps maintain the purine levels in the cell. They also participate in the purine salvage pathway, responsible for the recycling of nucleotides, necessary for replenishment of the cellular pool. Xanthine is also a phosphodiesterase inhibitor and an adenosine receptor antagonist. Adenosine promotes relaxation and sleep. Xanthine exerts a stimulant effect, enhancing alertness and reducing fatigue. Blood xanthine levels increase following ischemia, making xanthine a potentially useful marker for tissue hypoxia. AkrivisBio’s Xanthine/Hypoxanthine Assay is a simple sensitive means of monitoring xanthine and hypoxanthine concentrations in a variety of sample types with a sensitivity in the mid micromolar range.
