Ascorbic acid, commonly known as vitamin C, has significant metabolic roles in the human body. It is a water-soluble vitamin that serves as an enzyme cofactor, an antioxidant, and a modulator of several physiological processes. Its deficiency and excess are associated with numerous medical conditions, highlighting its importance in maintaining health. Ascorbate is essential for the hydroxylation of proline and lysine residues in collagen synthesis, crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of connective tissue, blood vessels, and skin. It participates in the biosynthesis of carnitine, necessary to fatty acid transport into mitochondria. It also aids in the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine, a key neurotransmitter. Ascorbic acid is a potent antioxidant that scavenges free radicals and reactive oxygen species, thereby protecting cells from oxidative damage. It also helps regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin E back to their active forms. Measurement of ascorbic acid has challenges due to the presence of other reducing substances in sample which can interfere with assays for ascorbate. AkrivisBio’s FRASC Assay is a simple, sensitive assay, designed to allow for precise measurement of ascorbate, in the presence of other substances with a sensitivity below 1 nmole.
