ATPases play a major role in cellular metabolism and energy transfer. They catalyze the hydrolysis of ATP into ADP and inorganic phosphate, releasing energy that drives various cellular processes. There are 4 major classes of ATPases, Types P, V, F and ABC, with many subdivisions and variations. P-type ATPases transport ions, generate membrane potential, and remove toxic ions from cells. They are involved in nerve impulses, muscle relaxation and kidney secretion/absorption; V-type are involved in receptor-mediated endocytosis, protein trafficking, and neurotransmitter release; F-type synthesize ATP using a proton gradient or hydrolyze ATP to create a gradient. ATPase dysfunction is related to several disease states, including cystic fibrosis, cancer, cardiac disorders, mitochondrial disorders and neurodegenerative disease. AkrivisBio’s ATPase Activity Assay is a simple, sensitive way to measure ATPase activity in a variety of biological samples with a sensitivity below 0.5 µUnits.
