Cholinesterases, primarily acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, are essential for the regulation of acetylcholine and a range of other metabolic and neurological functions. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), primarily found in the synapses of the nervous system and red blood cell membranes, is responsible for the hydrolysis of acetylcholine which terminates signal transmission at the synapse, essential for maintaining neurotransmitter activity and ensuring proper neuronal function. Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), found primarily in the plasma plays a secondary role in acetylcholine metabolism but appears to be widely important for lipid metabolism and energy homeostasis. AChE or BChE activities are useful biomarkers for central vs. peripheral nervous system activities. They can be selectively measured, allowing for the differentiation of their respective activities. AkrivisBio’s Cholinesterase Assay Kit is a simple sensitive way to measure the two activities separately without the need to separate erythrocytes from plasma.
