Cobalt, a hard, lustrous, grey metal, symbol Co, atomic number 27, atomic mass 58.9 is an essential trace-element for all multicellular organisms as the active center of cobalamin (vitamin B12). Cobalamin is a cofactor for methylmalonyl-CoA mutase and methionine synthase, critical for DNA and amino acid synthesis, fatty acid metabolism and energy production. Other important uses for cobalt include hematopoiesis, maintenance of the nervous system, myelin synthesis and as a component of HIF, a transcriptional activator which stimulate erythropoietin. Cobalt deficiency leads to dysfunction of methionine synthase and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase, megaloblastic anemia and nervous system disorders. In biotechnology cobalt is one of the most important metal ions used in protein purification protocols using His-Tag protocols. AkrivisBio’s Cobalt Assay is a very simple, add-and-read procedure for measurement of cobalt with a sensitivity approaching 1 nanomole of cobalt.
