Carbonic anhydrase is a family of enzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of CO2 to form bicarbonate and a proton. They are found throughout the body playing roles in various physiological processes including respiration, pH control and CO2 homeostasis, and providing the bicarbonate ion for gluconeogenesis and C4 photosynthesis with the conversion of pyruvate or PEP to oxaloacetate.
