Carbonic anhydrase is a family of enzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of CO2 to form bicarbonate and a proton. They are found throughout the body playing roles in various physiological processes including respiration, pH control and CO2 homeostasis, and providing the bicarbonate ion for gluconeogenesis and C4 photosynthesis with the conversion of pyruvate or PEP to oxaloacetate. Inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase are used for conditions ranging from glaucoma, where they reduce intraocular pressure, epilepsy where they help control seizures to high blood pressure and edema where they are employed as diuretics. AkrivisBio’s Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitor Screening Kit is a simple sensitive way to measure the effect of inhibitor candidates on carbonic anhydrase activity. The assay is adaptable to a high-throughput format.
