Diamine Oxidase (DAO) is important for the metabolism of histamine and other polyamines (spermine, spermidine, putrescine, cadaverine, etc.) Many of these polyamines are essential for cell proliferation and growth (putrescine is an activator of c-jun and c-fos expression) and diamine oxidase plays a large role as a regulatory factor. The enzyme is primarily located in rapidly proliferating tissues like bone marrow, and the small intestine and ascending colon where it is produced by mature enterocytes and released into the gut lumen. DAO levels during pregnancy can increase 500X over baseline levels. Reduced DAO activity can result in histamine intolerance, allergic rhinitis and affect intestinal mucosal integrity. AkrivisBio’s Diamine Oxidase Activity Assay is a simple, sensitive means of assessing DAO activity in a variety of sample types with a sensitivity below 1 µUnit.
