DESCRIPTION

D-Lactate, present in much lower quantities than the more common L-lactate is produced endogenously through the methylglyoxal pathway. This pathway generates nanomolar amounts of D-lactate, primarily in tissues with high glucose utilization rates, such as the brain and eye lens. The production of D-lactate may serve a protective function by scavenging free radicals and mitigating oxidative stress. Also produced by gut bacteria, elevated D-lactate levels may indicate intestinal barrier dysfunction, dysbiosis, or increased intestinal permeability. This could have implications for diagnosing and monitoring diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and short bowel syndrome. AkrivisBio’s PicoSense D-Lactate Assay is a simple, convenient way to measure D-lactate at concentration well below 1 µM.
