Formate, a simple, one-carbon carboxylic acid is a key intermediate of folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism. Formate, besides being an intermediate and enzyme substrate, also function as a signaling molecule. It increases adenine nucleotide levels, enhancing glycolysis rates, represses AMPK activity a key regulator of energy homeostasis and promotes pyrimidine precursor synthesis.
