GGT plays an important role in the gamma-glutamyl cycle, essential for synthesis and degradation of glutathione. GGT enables the breakdown of extracellular glutathione, allowing cells to recycle it and maintain intracellular glutathione levels. GGT is involved in drug and xenobiotic detoxification, helping the body process and eliminate potentially harmful substances through the conjugation of glutathione to a variety of toxins and drugs, aiding in their elimination. Paradoxically, while GGT is involved in glutathione-related antioxidant processes, elevated levels of serum GGT are associated with increased oxidative stress and inflammation. This apparent contradiction is due to GGT's role in the extracellular catabolism of glutathione, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species. In general terms, GGT is used as a marker of liver function and alcohol consumption and elevated GGT levels are linked to symptoms of metabolic syndrome, including increased insulin resistance, higher triglycerides and lower HDL cholesterol and increased blood pressure. AkrivisBio’s Gamma Glutamyl Transferase Activity Assay is a simple, sensitive way to measure GGT activity in a variety of samples with a sensitivity below 0.5 mU.
