DESCRIPTION

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is the major low molecular-weight thiol in living cells with an intracellular concentration ranging from 0.5 to 15 mM. As a highly reactive species, it forms conjugates with electrophilic molecules, increasing their aqueous solubility, allowing for more rapid elimination. Oxidative stress due to lowered levels of GSH results from consumption occurring faster than replacement by glutathione reductase. This results in many forms of cellular and mitochondrial damage which if severe enough leads to cell death. A variety of compounds can affect the intracellular glutathione level of cells.
