Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide antioxidant that is involved in numerous metabolic processes within the body. GSH serves as a powerful antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress by neutralizing reactive oxygen species. It directly reduces peroxides and free radicals, converting them into less harmful compounds. It is also conjugated to various toxins by cellular glutathione transferases, accelerating their elimination. GSH protects and regulates the redox state of proteins by S-glutathionylation which helps protect protein thiols from irreversible oxidation and modulates protein function. It enhances lymphocyte proliferation, protects mitochondria and helps maintain the reduced state of other antioxidants like ascorbate and vitamin E. AkrivisBio’s Total Glutathione Assay is a simple sensitive way to measure total cellular glutathione with a sensitivity below 1 µg/ml liquid or 10 ng/mg tissue.
