DESCRIPTION

Plasma kallikrein (PKa) is a key member of the kallikrein-kinin system counterbalancing the renin-angiotensin system in regulating blood pressure. PKa releases bradykinin, stimulating nitric oxide formation and prostacyclin release, lowering blood pressure. PKa is derived from prekallikrein, formed in the liver. PKa activates Factor XII in the intrinsic coagulation pathway and can activate the complement system by acting on C3 convertase and Factor B. Elevated PKa is associated with hypertension and cardiovascular complications in diabetes. PKa inhibition can decrease thrombosis and vascular inflammation. AkrivisBio’s Plasma Kallikrein Assay is a simple, sensitive way to measure PKa activity in plasma samples with a sensitivity below 50 µUnits per well.
