Mg+2 is essential to all organisms where it plays a role in over 300 enzymatic reactions. One of its most significant metabolic functions is in energy production where it is required for the formation and utilization of ATP. It also acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. Magnesium influences insulin signaling and glucose uptake; is involved in lipid metabolism where it appears to increase lipoprotein lipase activity; in the structural development of bone; contributes to DNA and RNA stability and in muscle and nerve function. It contributes to balancing cortisol levels by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Interestingly, despite its wide-ranging importance, as much as 50% of the population is estimated to be magnesium deficient. Magnesium content of tissues varies with erythrocytes having ~2 mM, most other tissues ~ 8-9 mM, and serum ~ 0.85 mM. AkrivisBio’s Magnesium Assay is a simple, sensitive means of measuring magnesium in a variety of sample types with a sensitivity below 1 nanomole per well.
