D-Mannitol is an abundant sugar alcohol, produced by many organisms. It has unique metabolic properties due to poor absorption and distinct metabolic pathways. Only about 25-50% of mannitol is absorbed in the small intestine. The rest passes to the large intestine where bacteria use it to produce short chain fatty acids. It has a glycemic index of 0, making it useful as a sweetener for diabetics. Mannitol is used as an osmoprotectant to reduce intracranial pressure and intraocular pressure. It draws water into the renal tubules, promoting diuresis. In plants, mannitol appears to protect against fungal infections, high salinity and drought, likely due to its osmotic effects. AkrivisBio’s D-mannitol Assay is a simple, sensitive way to measure mannitol in a variety of sample types with a sensitivity below 1 nanomole/well. This assay can also be used to measure L-arabitol, whose presence in blood or urine indicates candidiasis.
