Phosphoglucose isomerase catalyzes the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate to fructose-6-phosphate, playing a key role in glycolysis, gluconeogenesis and the pentose phosphate pathway. It’s primary function is to facilitate glycolysis through the formation of fructose-6-phosphate. In fungi, it’s necessary for cell wall synthesis. PGI deficiency in red blood cells leads to hemolytic anemia. Elevated serum PGI is associated with NAFLD and NASH as well as being a tumor marker in cancer, closely correlated with metastasis. AkrivisBio’s Phosphoglucose Isomerase Assay is a simple sensitive way to measure PGI activity in a variety of samples with a sensitivity below 10 µU per well.
