DESCRIPTION
At a very early stage after the initiation of apoptosis, phosphatidylserine is translocated from the inner face of the plasma membrane to the external cell surface, where it is easily accessible for detection. Annexin V has a very high and specific affinity for phosphatidylserine. By tagging Annexin V with a bright fluorophore such as fluorescein, a very sensitive way to identify apoptosis is possible.
